Prof. dr. Liesbeth Zegveld (1970) holds the Gieskes chair at the University of Leiden since September 2006. This chair has been created with the generous help of the Gieskes Fund, which was established by mr. H.L.J.M. Gieskes en mrs. D.N. Gieskes-Strijbis and concentrates on International Humanitarian Law, in particular the Rights of Women and Children. Among others, she teaches the new master course Protection of War Victims under International Law.  She studied law in Utrecht. In 2000 she obtained a doctorate with distinction and was awarded various prizes for her thesis. Prof. Zegveld was sworn in as an attorney in Amsterdam in 2000, when she became a partner at Böhler. She is a member of the international law & human rights department. In February 2008, she held her oration entitled Legal Remedies for Victims of Violations of International Humanitarian Law (pdf). Prof. Zegveld is a member of the International Law Association's Committee for Compensation for War Victims.  Her research therefore concentrates on remedies for war victims, for example the issues of statutes of limitation, mass claims procedures, and factfinding missions. She has had many articles published on subjects relating to these and other topics.   Liesbeth Zegveld has established the Nuhanovic Foundation, an organisation that is dedicated to the advancement of legal remedies for war victims. In 2011 she received the Clara Meijer-Wichmann award. This award is tributed on a yearly basis to persons who deserve a particular distinction for defending human rights, especially in The Netherlands.
