Vid Prislan is a PhD-candidate and doctoral candidate at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden University, where he currently conducts research on the role of domestic courts’ decisions in investor-State arbitration. His research project focuses on substantive and systemic aspects of the interaction between investment tribunals and domestic courts, by studying, among other issues, the interpretation and application of domestic law by investment arbitral tribunals, as well as the evolving standards of review of domestic courts’ decisions. The main aim of the project is to devise techniques through which the interaction between investment tribunals and domestic courts can be effectively regulated.

In addition to the topic of his doctoral research, his current research interests include other issues of foreign investment law, such as interaction of the latter with other subfields of public international law and Dutch foreign investment policy generally. With regard to the latter, he has just concluded, in co-authorship with Professor Nico Schrijver, a major study of Dutch bilateral investment treaties (BITs), which was published with Oxford University Press in 2013.

Vid Prislan has previously worked as a research assistant at the Grotius Centre, conducting research in the field of the law of the sea, boundary disputes, international dispute settlement, natural resource management, and public international law generally. In that function, he has assisted counsel in contentious cases before the PCA and the ICJ and has regularly provided expert advice to governments and private parties in territorial and maritime delimitation disputes and in the context of various investment arbitration proceedings.

Vid Prislan obtained an LL.M. degree (cum laude) in Public International Law from Leiden University and a university diploma in international relations from the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). He also worked as an intern with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague and as a student research assistant at the Leiden Law School.

Since 2008, he is Book-Review Editor of the Leiden Journal of International Law and is always interested in discussing book-review proposals.
