Freya Baetens wrote her PhD at the University of Cambridge (Gonville and Caius College) as W.M. Tapp scholar, Honourary European Trust fellow and Cambridge European Society Fellow, under the supervision of Prof. J. Crawford. Her doctoral thesis is entitled “Nationality-based discrimination in public international law, with a specific focus on human rights, trade and investment law”. Previously, she obtained the Cand.Jur./Lic.Jur. degree (BA/MA equiv.) magna cum laude at the University of Ghent and the LL.M. degree with honours (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar) at the University of Columbia, New York (BAEF and Fulbright Fellow).    

Since 2008, she is a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. Formerly she worked at two international law firms, the Belgian Supreme Court, an investment bank, the United Nations and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. She also participated in a research project at the British Institute for International and Comparative Law (BIICL) commissioned by the Chinese government and the European Commission, analysing investment treaties between China and the EU Member States. She is also working as tribunal assistant for several investor-State arbitration panels and cooperates in the drafting of memorials and expert opinions in international dispute settlement. 

At the University of Cambridge, Freya Baetens tutored and taught public international law to BA and MPhil students respectively, and since 2008 she is WTO-law guest lecturer in the LL.M. programme at the University of Surrey. She assists Prof. Don McRae in his work as Chairman of the ILC Working Group on Most-Favoured-Nation Clauses and is a member of the ILA Committees on Islam and international law; State insolvency;and biotechnology. Freya Baetens is also an editor of the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law. Her publications cover topics such as treaty interpretation and fragmentation of international law, peace conferences and decolonization, the Association of the EC with the Overseas Countries and Territories, foreign investment and the Kyoto Protocol.
In 2010, Freya Baetens was elected Member of the Executive Council of the Society of International Law (SIEL) and she was awarded a Fellowship of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL)." She is also a member of the Editorial Board (Senior book review editor) of the Leiden Journal of International Law and of the Academic Review Board of the Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law.
