Jorrit Rijpma joined the Europa Instituut in 2009 as an assistant professor.

He studied Portuguese language and culture at the University of Coimbra and law at the European Law School of the University of Maastricht. During his studies in Maastricht he worked as a student assistant for Professor Ellen Vos and was student member of the Editorial Board of the Maastricht Journal. He also did an internship at the European Law Department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2005 he obtained his master’s degree in European Legal Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges.

In November 2009 he successfully defend his PhD thesis at the European University Institute in Florence on the management of the external borders of the European Union. Part of the research for this thesis was carried out in the European Border Agency (Frontex) in Warsaw. In his thesis Rijpma links the development of the European “Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, in particular migration law, to the development of new forms of “institutional governance.”

Rijpma participated in a number of research projects, amongst others for the Italian government and the International Labor Organization (ILO). He was also involved in the development of the Dutch part of the EU profiler, the first European wide party profiling website for the elections of the European Parliament in 2009.
