Dr. Freya Baetens is Associate Professor of Law, Director of Studies at Leiden University College (LUC) and Head of the LUC Research Centre at Leiden University and a Visiting Professor at the World Trade Institute (WTI) in Berne. She is also an Associate Professor at the Europa Institute of the Leiden Law School. Concurrently with her academic activities, she has assisted several international arbitration panels and regularly acts as counsel or expert in international disputes as an associate lawyer with VVGB Advocaten/Avocats (Brussels). Before taking up her current position, she worked as Assistant Professor of Public International Law at Leiden University.

Dr. Freya Baetens is a Senior Officer on the Executive Board of the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL), a Fellow with the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) and a member of several Committees and Study Groups of the International Law Association (ILA). She is an editor of the Leiden Journal of International Law and member of the academic review board of the Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law. She has published on a wide range of topics, incl. treaty interpretation, state responsibility, equality, international trade and investment disputes, EU external relations, discrimination in international migration law, sustainable development, and interaction between legal regimes.

Dr. Freya Baetens obtained her Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge as a W.M. Tapp scholar, Honourary European Trust fellow and Cambridge European Society Fellow, as well as a Research Fellow of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg.  Previously, she obtained the Cand.Jur./Lic.Jur. degree (LL.B./LL.B. equiv.) magna cum laude at the University of Ghent and the LL.M. degree with honours (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar) at the University of Columbia, New York (BAEF and Fulbright Fellow).
