Dr. Yuzuru Shimada (affiliated fellow)

Yuzuru Shimada is an associate professor at the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, Japan and is currently associated with the Van Vollenhoven Institute as an affiliated fellow.

Yuzuru Shimada studied Asian Law at Nagoya University, where he obtained a PhD in 2002 with a dissertation entitled: "Freedom of Expression in Indonesia: Press Regulation During the Soeharto Regime" (in Japanese). He also studied at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 1997 until 1998. 

As from October 2012 until September 2013 he stayed at the Van Vollenhoven Institute as a guest researcher with a research fellowship from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). His research focuses on judicial management in the colony, in particular appointments and promotions of judges in the colonial judiciary of the Dutch East Indies. The research collaboration with the VVI on this subject still continues.
