Willem van der Muur is a PhD researcher who participates in the KITLV Joint Research Programme ‘From Clients to Citizens? Emerging citizenship in democratizing Indonesia.’ His research project is called ‘Securing land rights: Land conflicts in democratizing Indonesia.’

He has obtained degrees in Sociology (BSc), Contemporary Asian Studies (MSc) and International and European Law (LL.M) from the University of Amsterdam. His master thesis for Contemporary Asian Studies explored the relationship between the Indonesian middle class and environmental activism. His law master thesis, written during an internship at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Thailand, dealt with the ASEAN Economic Community 2015.

His research and activities at the VVI focus on contemporary land conflicts in Indonesia, particularly on how Indonesia’s institutional and legal reforms over the past 15 years have altered the strategies and capabilities of both peasants and state agents to settle land conflicts. The specific areas of research are Mesuji (Lampung) and Bulukumba (South-Sulawesi). The project is funded by KNAW.
