Former President of European Court of Human Rights gives a lecture
On Saturday 10 December – international human rights day – Mr Jean-Paul Costa, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights 1998-2011, President of the Court from 19 January 2007 to 3 November 2011, will deliver the first Raymond and Beverly Sackler Distinguished Lecture on Human Rights at Leiden Law School.
The title of his lecture is: “The current challenges facing the European Court of Human Rights”.
In the past year, the legitimacy of the judgments of the ECHR has been the subject of some rather fierce debates in several European countries, including The Netherlands. Mr. Costa will reflect on these debates. The lecture is followed by a Q & A session.
Dr. Raymond R. Sackler is an American physician and entrepreneur. With his brothers Arthur M. Sackler (1913–1987) and Mortimer Sackler (1916–2010) he founded the pharmaceutical company LTR Pharmaceutical. He and his wife, Beverly, are international philanthropists with a commitment to supporting scientific research. In 2011 The Sackler Distinguished Lecture Series on Human Rights at Leiden University was established through an endowment given by Raymond and Beverly Sackler. The endowment offers Leiden Law School the opportunity to invite distinguished international experts to lecture on developments in international human rights law.
