Hans Nieuwenhuis passed away
On Thursday 18 June Hans Nieuwenhuis, Professor Emeritus in Civil Law, passed away at the age of seventy. Following his retirement in 2009 Hans Nieuwenhuis was a regular visitor to the law faculty and remained active in numerous committees until he became ill.
With his passing, we have lost an inspiring colleague, a wonderful lecturer and a very learned person with very broad interests. Until his illness he was still active in numerous committees and acted as chairman at PhD defence ceremonies and on the Academic Integrity Committee of Leiden University. Hans Nieuwenhuis was an extremely well-read person who also wrote a great deal himself, in recent years at the interface between law and literature. His final book, on Europe, will be published in October. Leiden Law School is deeply indebted to him.
